Trigger Stats

Analyze the performance of automated triggers and workflows, including metrics such as execution rates, engagement, and success or failure outcomes. Unlike one-time broadcasts or scheduled evergreen campaigns, triggers fire continuously whenever their conditions are met, accumulating statistics over time as long as the trigger remains active.

Navigate to Statistics → Trigger Stats to access trigger statistics.

Understanding Trigger Statistics

Triggers differ from other campaign types in how they accumulate statistics:

  • Broadcasts send once to a defined audience, with statistics representing that single send
  • Evergreens send on a schedule, with each run creating separate statistics
  • Triggers fire continuously whenever conditions are met, accumulating statistics over their entire lifetime

This means a trigger's statistics represent all activity since it was created and activated. A trigger with 145 "Total Actions" has executed 145 times across any number of days, weeks, or months. The statistics continue to grow as long as the trigger remains functional.

Triggers List

The main page displays all your triggers with summary information about their execution history and current activity.

Filtering Options

ControlDescription
Our records / User recordsSwitch between viewing triggers created by administrators versus those created by regular users - useful in Commercial ESP installations where users create their own automations
Filter by adminNarrow down the list to show only triggers created by a specific administrator, making it easier to manage triggers in multi-user environments
Show entriesControl how many triggers are displayed per page - increase this when you need to compare many triggers at once
SearchFind specific triggers by typing any part of the trigger name - the list filters in real-time as you type

Table Columns

ColumnDescription
IDA unique numeric identifier assigned to each trigger - useful for referencing specific triggers in support requests or when troubleshooting automation issues
NameThe name you assigned to this trigger when creating it - descriptive names help identify the purpose and action of each automation
AudienceThe targeting method for this trigger: "Based On List" targets contacts in specific lists, "Based On Segment" targets contacts matching segment criteria, or "Custom" for triggers with custom targeting rules
Trigger ActionWhat happens when the trigger fires - common actions include "Send Broadcast" to send an email, "Start a drip group" to begin a drip sequence, "Remove subscriber" to unsubscribe contacts, or "Send notification email to admin" for internal alerts
Total ActionsThe cumulative number of times this trigger has executed since it was created - this number continues to grow as long as the trigger remains active and conditions are met
Last ActivityThe date and time when this trigger most recently fired - helps you verify the trigger is still functioning and identify inactive triggers

Audience Types

Triggers can target contacts in different ways:

Audience TypeDescription
Based On ListThe trigger fires when contacts are added to, removed from, or exist in specific contact lists - useful for welcome emails, list-specific automations, or actions based on list membership changes
Based On SegmentThe trigger fires when contacts enter or exit dynamic segments based on criteria - useful for behavior-based automations like targeting contacts who opened an email or clicked a link
CustomThe trigger uses custom targeting rules that don't fit the standard list or segment model - may include event-based triggers or complex conditional logic

Trigger Actions

Different triggers perform different actions when they fire:

ActionDescription
Send BroadcastSends an email to the contact who triggered the condition - this is the most common action and generates engagement statistics (opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes)
Start a drip groupEnrolls the contact in a drip sequence, starting them on a series of timed emails - statistics show how many contacts have been enrolled
Remove subscriberUnsubscribes the contact from a list when the trigger condition is met - useful for suppression automations or preference management
Send notification email to adminSends an internal notification to administrators when the trigger fires - useful for alerts about specific contact actions or system events

Trigger Statistics Detail

Clicking the Details icon opens the statistics view for that trigger. The statistics interface varies depending on the trigger action type.

Send Broadcast Triggers

For triggers with a "Send Broadcast" action, the statistics interface is identical to Broadcast Stats, providing:

  • Summary Tab - Overview metrics, visual analytics, and configuration details
  • Opened Tab - Detailed list of every contact who opened emails sent by this trigger
  • Clicked Tab - Complete click event data showing who clicked which links
  • Unsubscribed Tab - Contacts who opted out after receiving trigger emails
  • Bounced Tab - Delivery failures with SMTP error codes and details
  • Complaints Tab - Spam complaints received from trigger-sent emails
  • Logs Tab - Full delivery lifecycle for every email sent by this trigger
  • A/B Tab - Comparative analysis by list, SMTP node, links, or browser

See Broadcast Stats for detailed documentation of each tab and its features.

Start a Drip Group Triggers

For triggers with a "Start a drip group" action, clicking Details opens an intermediate page showing all drips within the drip group, with summary statistics for each.

The page displays trigger context information:

FieldDescription
Trigger DetailsThe page title showing the trigger name
Drip groupThe name of the drip group that this trigger starts contacts on
AudienceThe audience targeting type (List, Segment, or Custom)
ListThe specific contact list being targeted (shown when Audience is "List")

Drips Table

The table lists each drip within the drip group with its individual statistics:

ColumnDescription
IDThe unique identifier for this drip within the group
Drip NameThe name assigned to this drip - each drip in the group appears as a separate row
IntervalThe timing setting for this drip: "Instant" for immediate sending, or a time delay (e.g., "1 day", "3 hours") indicating when this drip sends after the previous one
Last ActivityThe date and time when this drip most recently sent an email to a contact - helps verify the drip sequence is actively running
SentThe total number of emails sent by this specific drip across all contacts who have reached this point in the sequence
OpenedOpen statistics for this drip displayed as "Unique/Total" - compare across drips to see which messages in the sequence generate the most engagement
ClickedClick statistics for this drip displayed as "Unique/Total" - helps identify which drip emails drive the most action
UnsubscribedThe number of contacts who unsubscribed after receiving this specific drip - high numbers on a particular drip may indicate content issues
DetailsClick this icon to view the full broadcast-style statistics for this individual drip

If the drip group contains multiple drips, each one appears as a separate row, allowing you to compare performance across the entire drip sequence. Click the Details icon on any individual drip to see the complete statistics interface (identical to Broadcast Stats).

Continuous Statistics

Unlike broadcast statistics that represent a single send, trigger statistics are cumulative and ongoing:

  • Opens, clicks, and other engagement metrics accumulate over the entire lifetime of the trigger
  • New activity appears continuously as the trigger continues to fire for new contacts
  • Historical data is preserved - you can see engagement from contacts who triggered months ago alongside recent activity
  • The Logs tab may contain many entries spanning a long time period if the trigger has been active for a while

Interpreting Trigger Performance

Execution Frequency

The Total Actions column shows how often the trigger fires:

  • High action counts indicate the trigger conditions are frequently met - verify this is expected behavior
  • Low action counts may indicate overly restrictive conditions or that the trigger targets a small audience
  • Zero actions on an active trigger suggests the conditions are never being met - review the trigger configuration

Activity Patterns

The Last Activity timestamp helps identify trigger health:

  • Recent activity confirms the trigger is functioning and conditions are being met
  • Stale timestamps (days or weeks ago) on triggers that should fire frequently may indicate a problem
  • Never-fired triggers should be reviewed to ensure conditions are correctly configured

Engagement Quality

For email-sending triggers, review the detailed statistics to assess engagement:

  • Open and click rates indicate content relevance and audience interest
  • High bounce rates suggest list quality issues for the contacts triggering this automation
  • Unsubscribe spikes may indicate the trigger is firing too frequently or content isn't relevant

Best Practices

Monitoring Triggers

  • Review Total Actions periodically to ensure triggers are firing at expected rates
  • Check Last Activity for triggers that should fire frequently to confirm they're still working
  • Compare similar triggers to identify which automations perform best
  • Monitor engagement metrics for email-sending triggers to ensure content resonates

Optimizing Performance

  • Refine trigger conditions if a trigger fires too often or not often enough
  • Improve email content for triggers with low open or click rates
  • Adjust timing or delays if trigger emails seem poorly timed
  • Segment your triggers - create specific triggers for different audience segments rather than one broad automation

Maintenance

  • Disable unused triggers that no longer serve a purpose to keep your automation clean
  • Archive or delete old triggers with zero recent activity after confirming they're no longer needed
  • Review trigger actions periodically to ensure they still align with your marketing goals
  • Update content in trigger-sent broadcasts to keep messaging fresh
